You want ME to teach you to shoot!?!
Now, don't get me wrong. I like shooting. But . . . I am most familier with the M16A1, and following that, the M16A2. The civilian versions are ridiculously expensive. Do people really pay that much for things that work that poorly?
Wait, don't answer that. I won't pay for something like that.
But . . . I need to find an affordable, reliable rifle, bolt action is fine, that runs under $300, the cheaper the better. (The friend in question is a college student.) For someone who has never learned how to shoot. He's a righty, like me. (Lefty suggestions are welcome, however, as my husband and Hemi are both lefties, and while Hemi has a few years to go . . .) Our friend thinks he'd like . . . well, a lot of things, most of which are either impractical (No, you do not need a automatic rifle, nor the attendent paperwork and hassle.) or impossible (Yes, I agree a rocket launcher would be cool, but I don't think they'll let you have one.). I think he'd like something that won't break the bank and will work, is easy to take apart and clean (aside from those plastic guards on the M16s, they were what I would consider easy, probably why they jammed so much) and put back together again. He's basically a sensible guy, if given a bit to fantasizing (you should hear his plans for his eventual house/bunker!), or I wouldn't be considering teaching him to shoot, and his reasons for wanting to learn are the correct ones for someone who is a non-hunter, the sort of guy we'd want hanging around WTSHTF.
I'm not sure I'm the best possible teacher out there, but I do know the basics. I could use a rifle with the above qualifications myself, but I want to get my revolver first, and I know exactly which one I think I want, if I could just find one I could fire to be sure. In a pinch, I can always use one of Dad's rifles, after all. (But I will not ask Dad to borrow one of his to teach someone he doesn't really know how to shoot.)
I could teach our friend some with my shotgun, and perhaps that is my best bet. I learned first on Mom's .22 rifle, later the shotgun. I'm not sure the shotgun is particularly good to teach aim, it just has the bead on the end. But the most important thing he needs to learn are the two rules:
It's always loaded, ESPECIALLY when you KNOW it's not.
Don't point it at anything you don't want dead.
Once you've got those down, the rest is easy. Like anything else, it just takes practice.

Good rifle under $300?
Are you ok if its used?
If not you can generally pick up soviet block mil surplus fairly cheep, more on this latter.
Getting a 22 rifle should be a priority for you, if for no other reason than starting the kids to shooting, a good quality air gun can serve as a trainer too, but somehow a 22 seems like a real gun, and a air gun is just a BB gun to most folks, even when they fire at the same fps. I’d forget about using the shotgun as a rifle trainer its not the same even with slugs and it can get pricy to do enough shooting.
For teaching the basics of marksmanship a 22 is fine. For your friend, you need to talk him into getting his own gun and you showing him how to use it. There are a number of great guns in the $500 range, but you said $300.
Two semiauto military guns come to mind that will fit the bill:
The SKS and the AK-47.
I mention these because it seems he’d probably like them and they are in the price range. Quality AK’s (Russian, east german, yugo) are more than $300 but you can get low end (China made) ones for $300 and they will work fine. Good quality SKS’s are $200 or so. 7.62x39 ammo is cheep and can be had for less than $200 per case. Both guns will serve to teach him how to shoot out to 200 to 300 yards.
For long range work (again keeping it cheep) the 7.62x54 Russian is superior to the 30.06 in a comparably made rifle. These guns are generally over 60 years old and can be bought for under $250. You can get an excellent rifle and with practice should be able to double his range to the 500 to 600 yards. Again practice ammo is inexpensive, but match grade long range ammo might be harder to find. After shooting 500 to 1000 rounds he’ll have enough brass to load up his own if he’s really into it. Components are readily available, a 7.62 is the same as a 30 cal, making it the most common reloading rile bullet.
Email if you need to.

For a good bolt action rifle: Check out the stevens model 200
http://www.savagearms.com/st_200long.htm
They sell in my area for $260, which is an incredible price for a bolt action repeater. They are made by and nearly identical to Savage. They are not fancy, but Savage has the reputation to be the most accurate rifle without gunsmith tuning. The Stevens rifles are basically the same, lacking only the acutrigger. I have seen reviews in gun mags and the word on the net is that they are just as accurate as Savage. There are many aftermarket triggers, stocks, etc that will fit if upgrading is desired. I want one for myself, but financial discipline is the order of the day.
Another option is to just get a savage, as the accutrigger is a neat feature. I bought a savage a year ago for $330 on clearance, they should be less than $400
I agree with Res, that a shooter should start with a .22 rimfire. In that area, I recommend the ruger 10/22 (it is semiauto), as it doesn't cost much more than a bolt action .22. This is basically the semiauto that all others are measured against. There may be better, but you will pay much more. A ruger 10/22 is around $200 at Walmart.
As for teaching with a shotgun, well that is an entirely different kind of shooting, but saftey rules are the same. And though he might feel out of place with all the 12 yr olds, the best thing would be an NRA hunter safety course.

I don't see a problem with used, so long as it's been taken care of.
We'll get a .22 eventually, or borrow Mom's, for the boys, but the big one doesn't yet have the necessary self-control for that lesson yet.
I wish the local range had weapons you could borrow, but it doesn't. Very low-scale. I'll have to ask at the gun-shop if there is a big range within driving distance, I don't know why I didn't think about that the last time I was there, oh, yeah, I was drooling over that Taurus revolver, that's why.
Girrafe, when I did hunter safety they didn't do shooting. (Only about ten minutes at the end.) I don't know if that's a state thing or an era thing, but the assumption was that if you'd lived to twelve years old in this area you knew how to handle the gun. And had probably been hunting numerous times as general pack-animal. Hunters' Ed was more about scaring us silly than anything else. (If this particular young man went to a Hunters' Ed class, he's such a babyface they'd probably think he WAS 12, at that!)
Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemen.

You don't need to go used. For under $300 you can get a great deal on a Savage bolt action in .270 or (the one we have) .308 complete with a 4x forward mounted Scout scope. My son and I shoot competitively and this is a true MOA rifle. It shoots as good as my Springfield Armory M14 SOCOM, and that rifle cost me five times as much.
